There are many different groups of people using TOR, but all of them have one thing in common – They all want or need privacy and anonymity.
One kind are Journalists, Whistle-blowers, politicians, activists, etc.
Another one is, Drug dealers, Credit Cards sellers, pedophiles, etc.
Depending on where you go on the “darkweb”, you’ll run into some of them. It’s not uncommon to see pedophiles (or even worse, murderers) on certain IRC network talking openly about it. It’s actually an interesting thing, where else can you meet people that you know are all around you, but still hiding their true self ?
One thinks that pedophiles, sociopath, psychopaths and other “deviants” are not among us constantly, but there are studies that show that we’re in company of people like that daily. If you talk with 50 people today, chances are you run into somebody that has some dark secret to hide. On TOR people are hiding behind their nicknames, which cannot be traced.
Having talked about that group a little, I guess I should mention the first group as well, namely Journalists, Whistle-blowers, Activists…
Everybody heard of Edward Snowden (the guy that reveled NSA domestic and foreign spying programs) ? Assange of wikileaks ?
One thing all of these people have in common is using TOR to transfer files and communicate with each other. TOR is a network that even Governments, have problem breaching and identifying people on it. This is very important in these ages, where Governments and their corporate overlords are literally eradicating privacy and anonymity any which way they can.
TOR is a safe-heaven and a big Fuck-You to those entities that George Orwell described in 1984.
As such, let it live long and be whatever it evolves into.
